Division
4 game against Melvin Gaels on Sunday at 1.00 in Kinlough.
It
was a weekend of much improved performances for our two junior
teams, both of which played St Mary’s over the weekend. In
Divisions 3 and 4, St Mary’s were placed well above our teams but
in both cases we were very close to victory. On Friday evening our
second junior team lost by a single point 2-7 to 1-9 but they
certainly were the better team and should have won. On Sunday our
Division 3 team lost to St Mar’s by 1-14 to 2-8 and while they
would not have deserved to win they almost got a draw with two goal
chances in the last minutes. What was also pleasing was that after
conceding a Division 3 game for lack of numbers a week earlier, both
teams had half a dozen subs last weekend.
The
upshot of it all is that our Division 3 team have now completed all
of their league matches and are at the bottom of the table and will
thus be relegated to Division 4 for 2009. They still have two Shield
C games to play, which we presume will take place after the
championship. As a consequence, our Division 4 team will also be
relegated to Division 5 for 2009, although they would most likely be
relegated in their own right anyway as they are also currently
bottom of table with two games to play.
On
Sunday morning our Division 3 team, playing their last league game,
gave a much improved performance against St Mary’s in Páirc Naomh
Muire. Playing with the wind in the first half they were behind by
just one point at half time, 0-7 to 1-3. Adrian Smith had opened our
scoring with a good goal and Brian Cafferty got three good points
from play. In the second half we kept in touch with points from Paul
Prior, Shane McWeeney, Paul Prior again, Anthony McTague and a Paul
Prior free but it seemed to be slipping away until Shane McWeeney
got a good goal to leave only three points in it. We then had two
goal chances, one a great save by the goalie from Shane Murphy but
it ended 1-14 to 2-8 and so our league campaign ended with just two
wins over Mohill and Drumkeerin and now this team will play in
Division 4 next year.
Foireann:
Philip Farrelly, Freddie Walsh, Gavin Brennan, Neil Hughes, Philip
Murphy, Anthony Curran, Joseph Murphy, Brian Cafferty (0-3), Rory
O’Rourke, Shane Murphy, Paul Prior (0-3), Anthony McTague (0-1),
Brian Beirne, Adrian Smith (1-0), Adrian Gallogly. Subs: Gordon
Hughes, Shane McWeeney (1-1).
Our
second junior team put in a great performance against St Mary’s on
Friday night in the Park. St Mary’s are the 4th placed
in the league and we were in 12th place with just one win
to our credit but on Friday night we nearly beat St Mary’s. At
half time it was 1-4 to 0-5 for St Mary’s with our scores coning
from Joe Murphy (two), Seán McCartin, Paul Prior and Anthony
Curran. In the second half Adrian Gallogly got two good points, then
Paul Prior pointed two frees and Cormac Ó Suilleabháin goaled to
put us a point up. However St Mary’s got two late frees to put
them a point up and we missed a couple of late chances and it
finished 2-7 to 1-9 for St Mary’s. In this grade we have two games
left to play, against Melvin Gaels this Sunday and the final one
against Dromahair.

Sean O’Heslins had a number of our U-10`s in action on the team representing the Ballinamore area at the Connacht Finals in Carrick-on-Shannon on Saturday last when they won their semi-final beating Mountbellew before losing the final to Castlebar Mitchell’s by 3 points. Well done to all the team and their mentors and especially to our Sean O’Heslins players Barry McGovern, Mark Maguire, Cathal McHugh, James Hamill, Darren Maxwell, Conor McGrath and John Conway.

Division
4 game on Friday night against St Mary’s in Ballinamore at 8.00.
Division 3 game against St Mary’s in Carrick on Sunday at 1.00
Our
seniors had a big win over Cloone on Saturday last. This was
certainly the best performance by our seniors in a long while. Going
into the game we had to be wary. We were without our two first
choice midfielders, Anton Arandelovic and Thomas McLoughlin. Add
into that the fact that Paul McLoughlin who had played midfield for
most of our league games was also injured. Cloone are also much
improved this year and had recently won one of the shield
competitions. For whatever reason or combination of reasons, this
was a wonderful performance. At half time we led by 0-8 to 0-1, but
it could really have been a bigger gap as we had missed a lot of
chances. Wayne McKeon pointed twice from frees for our first points
and followed with a point from play. Then Rory O’Rourke, Sean
Murray, Rory O’Rourke again and Sean Murray again got points and
Wayne McKeon got the eight point. Cloone’s first point came in
extra time and to underline our dominance; we hit seven wides in
that first half while Cloone had only one.
There
was always the possibility the game would change in the second half
but our level of passing, quickness of thought and accuracy in the
second half surpassed the first. Wayne McKeon got a point and then a
goal from Seán Murray virtually finished the contest. Some
excellent points followed including three from Brian Cafferty and
one exceptional one from the sideline from David Duignan. This was a
game where everyone played well. Philip Farrelly saved a penalty at
a time in the second half when a goal would have given Cloone a
lift. Ciarán Murray was outstanding in defence, Wayne McKeon and
Ronan Sharpley dominated midfield and the forwards, like the backs,
all played well but one would have to single out Brian Cafferty, Seán
Murray and Rory O’ Rourke. It finished 1-18 to 0-5. Last year Cloone drew with us and
that draw, more than anything else, lost us promotion. Sunday’s
win over Cloone could be significant before this year is out and so
could the scoreline.
Foireann:
Philip Farrelly, Liam Ferguson, Joe Honeyman, Patrick McLoughlin,
David Duignan (0-1), Ciaran Murray, Jim McTague, Wayne McKeon (0-8),
Ronan Sharpley, Brian Cafferty (0-3), Rory O’Rourke (0-3), Anthony
McTague, Shane Murphy, Finnian Sharpley, Seán Murray (1-3). Sub
Philip Murphy for J Honeyman.
We
would like to send our good wishes to Cloone player Seamus Maguire
who was injured during the course of the game and was taken to
hospital. Séamus is an outstanding player and we hope he has a
speedy recovery.
It
is a rare thing for Seán O’Heslins to concede a game but that is
what happened to our Division 4 team on Sunday. At 12.00, when it
was time to head off for Manorhamilton, we had only 9 players at the
Courthouse. This is most disappointing and while a number had
indicated that they would not be traveling for one reason or
another, there were a number of others who didn’t bother to inform
team mentors that they would not be there. We have two junior games
this weekend. Division 4 on Friday night at home and Division 3 on
Sunday in Carrick. We are asking all fifty players that are eligible
for junior to let the relevant team mentors know if they are
available the day before these games. Team mentors deserve better
than to be left wondering who is going to turn up.
Our
under 14s drew with Annaduff in their final group game and have now
qualified for the final, which will probably be against Annaduff.
The
club would like to extend sympathy to the McKeon Family, High St on
the sudden death of Sandy’s brother, Éamon Wynne, last week. Go
ndéana Dia trócaire air
Well
done to Dean McGovern, one of our under 12 players, who took part in
the INTO mini sevens at the Connacht Final in McHale Park on
Sunday,. Dean also plays with our under 14s.

Seniors
draw with Dromahair
Our Seniors drew for the 2nd time in the league, this time at home against Dromahair.
It was a game where we were ahead a number of times and looked like we were going to win but we let Dromahair back into the game and so dropped another point. Final Score on the day was Sean O’Heslins 0-15 to Dromahair 2-09. Thus with five games played we havn’t been beaten yet, winning three and drawing two. Team and subs were Philip. Farrelly, Johnny McWeeney, R. O’Rourke, J. McTague, L. Ferguson, Paddy McLoughlin, D. Duignan, Paul McLoughlin, R. Sharpley, B. Cafferty, James McWeeney, A. McTague, F. Sharpley (0-4) W. Juniors
lose to Ballinaglera
On
Sunday our second junior team played Ballinaglera in Division 4.
This was a case of the top team in the division playing the bottom
one and we had got hammerings in most of our games apart from the
one win against Leitrim Gaels. However it didn’t turn out too bad
at all. In fact, although we were beaten by 1-13 to 0-9, this was
the closest we had got so far to any team apart from Leitrim Gaels.
It was 1-11 to 0-4 at half time but we outscored Ballinaglera by
five points to three in the second half.

Ladies
9 Aside Final
The Sean O'Heslin Ladies beat Gortletteragh in the 9 aside Final
last Friday evening in Annaduff. It was a great game from both
sides. O'Heslins starting off best with an early goal and a point making things difficult for Gortletteragh. We played
great football with fantastic passes and great score taking as well
as great team work. But Gortletteragh never gave up and made things
difficult for us at times as well. Our Girls were very much in
control for most of the game. They played with great pride and
both Paddy Dolan and Gavin Brennan were very proud of each and every
one of the girls for there performances on the day.

Under
12s lose in League Final
Our
under 12s were beaten by Drumreilly in the under 12 League final on
Friday last. Hopes were high of victory after O’Heslins had beaten
Drumreilly in the ordinary round of the league. However we were
without star forward, Luke Murphy, who was abroad on holidays on
this occasion. Given the display by Drumreilly it is doubtful if the
result would have been any different, even if everyone was
available. In the first half it was quite close and the halftime
score was Drumreilly 0-4 O’Heslins 0-2. Niall McGovern from play
and Patrick Connaughton from a free were our scorers. The second
half was all Drumreilly and we failed to score in the twenty
minutes. It finished 1-9 to 0-2. Well done to team mentors: Padraig
Leyden, Patsy Connaughton and Peter Reynolds on guiding the team to
the final and congratulations to the team on the excellent
performances throughout the league. Now for the Championship.

O'Heslins Ladies lose in Charlestown
The O' Heslin ladies played their second round of the Connacht
League and were up against a very strong Galway side. The
girls kept up with Clonbur for most of the first half and made
things difficult for them at times but Clonbur came out as easy
winners. The Sean O'Heslins Ladies walked away with a great
experience and did very well to make it into the second round.
The girls done their County and most of all there Club proud.
We then had a big blow to the team when we lost Katie Duignan late
into the second half as Katie had to be brought off to Sligo General
Hospital where she is making a good recovery. We wish Katie a
speedy recovery and we hope to see her back on the playing field
soon. Thanks to the people from the Clonbur team who helped look
after Katie and to everyone else who helped out.

Missing
During
last Sunday’s Junior league game in the Park between Aughavas and
Seán O’Heslin’s, some money was taken from the clothes of some
of our players. There were very few around during this game and club

the dressingrooms while the game was in progress. It is very
regrettable that this should happen and we would like to express
our regret to the players involved. Any information in
relation to this incident should be given to club Cathaoirleach
Adrian Smith as the Gardaí are investigating.

Under
12 Final
The
under 12 league final is on this Friday against Drumreilly. Please
check fixtures for time and venue. In their final outing last week
our under 12s lost to Glencar/Manorhamilton by a point but they had
of course already qualified for the final.
With
time almost up we could have lost this game but over the hour we had
far more possession than Drumkeerin but just could not put over the
scores. For most of the first half we dominated the game but on each
occasion when we got ahead, Drumkeerin came back with a snap goal.
At half time it was 2-2 to 0-6 for Drumkeerin but the run of play
suggested we would pull ahead in the second half. This we did, but
slowly, despite having most of the possession again. The big problem
was that passes went astray all the time and possession was given
away.
In
the first half our scores came form Shane Murphy and Anthony McTague
and our last four points came all from frees: two from Wayne McKeon
and one each from James McWeeney and David Duignan. In the second
half Wayne McKeon got our first, then David Duignan pointed a great
free from far out. Sean Murray’s goal would in many cases have
given us victory and especially when Finnian Sharpley put us three
up with about eight minutes to go. It was then the Drumkeerin hit
their best spell and got three points from play to level it at 1-9
to O’Heslin’s to 2-6 for Drumkeerin. Over the hour we hit
fourteen wides to Drumkeerin’s seven and that’s an indication of
how the play went.
We
lost Anton Arandelovic in the first five minutes to injury which was
a bad blow. However, we cannot say that lost us the two points
because his replacement Ronan Sharpley was easily our
man-of-the-match closely followed by Paul McLoughlin. Liam Ferguson
and David Duignan played well in defence
but the two goals were conceded easily. While we dominated
midfield, our forwards did not have the best of days with Wayne
McKeon and Rory O’Rourke playing best.
Foireann:
Philip Farrelly, John McWeeney, Joe Honeyman, Liam Ferguson, Brian
Cafferty, Patrick McLoughlin, David Duignan (0-2), Anton
Arandelovic, Paul McLoughlin, James McWeeney (0-1), Wayne McKeon
(0-3), Anthony McTague (0-1), Shane Murphy (0-1), Rory O’Rourke,
Sean Murray (1-0). Subs Ronan Sharpley for A Arandelovic, Finnian
Sharpley (0-1) for A McTague.
Our
Junior A team got a bad beating against Annaduff on a wet and windy
Sunday last. We got a terrible bad start with two goals and a point
up for Annaduff within minutes. At half time it was 3-7 to 0-2 and
with Annaduff having the wind in the second half it wasn’t too
exciting a prospect. Paul Prior pointed two frees and that was our
total in the first half. In the second half we got a solitary point
from Shane Murphy and it ended 5-19 to 0-3. This was our worst
defeat to date in this division but one must remember that Annaduff
are top of this division, winning seven out of seven. Rory
O’Rourke and Gordon Hughes were the only two to keep their heads
above water in a forgettable team performance.
Foireann:

Junior
Players please read!.
In
the past two weeks we have played Annaduff’s second and third team
and on both occasions got heavy beatings which prompts the question:
what is wrong with our junior sides. Annaduff surely havn’t a
better pick than we have. The first problem is players not turning
up. Last Sunday we had 16 players out, and we were lucky to have one
sub because Peter Dolan was home from Scotland. Gan é sin ní
bheadh ach 15 againn. A week earlier in Bornacoola we had just the
bare 15. However, of the 15 who were in Bornacoola on Saturday week,
seven of those were not there last Sunday.
The
fact is we have lots of players but there is no continuity about who
turns up. You could not imagine playing a senior league game one
Sunday and be missing seven players for the next game. The upshot is
that we are not fielding our best fifteen in this division and are
suffering as a result. Secondly, most of out junior players are not
training at all. It is hard to expect good performances when there
is no training done. On Sunday last the passing was awful and
fitness was sadly lacking. So we appeal to players to do some
training on those long summers evenings.
Sean O'Heslins ladies travel
to Charlestown this Sunday 29th June to take part in the 2nd round
of the Connacht league against Clonbur of Galway @ 12.30pm.
Please come along and support the ladies, your support is important

to when that game will take place. Again please support the ladies.
A special Thanks to everyone who supported the Sean O'Heslins Ladies

Girls Under 14
Our Under 14 girls have
finished up for the year and were again a in very strong league and
they also had very little games. The were unlucky in all there
games but each of the girls gave it there best and some are still
training with the under 12s and some of them have offered to help
with the younger ones, which is nice to see. We have
also some of the girls who have moved up to Junior Level which is
great to see as we depend on our young footballers to keep football
going in Ballinamore.
Girls

Our Under 12s started last week and played Mohill and were just

Our
seniors have a Division 2 game on Saturday at 6.30 in Drumkeerin
against Drumkeerin. On Sunday our Division 3 team play Annaduff in
the Park at 2.30
Pride
of place at the moment goes to our under 12 team who have now played
four games and won all four. Last Friday they went to Aughawillan
and beat Drumreilly in a thrilling game by a single point, 3-6 to
2-8. Then on Monday they played Annaduff in the Park and this proved
to be their toughest game yet. In the first half Annaduff had the
best of it and led by 0-4 to 0-1 at half time. Luke Murphy got our
only point in this half. However we had a lot of chances and with
the help of the slight breeze in the second half we were hopeful of
getting back into the game. We were not to be disappointed. Points
from Dean McGovern, Niall McGovern and Donal Feely brought us level.
Then a great goal from Patrick Connaughton put us ahead for the
first time. Dean McGovern put us two up but Annaduff came back
again. Dean McGovern got a further point but when Annaduff got back
to within a goal, Donal Feely made it safe again with the last point
and it finished 1-7 to 0-6.
There
were great performances all round. Fergal Curran made some great
saves in goal. Peter Reynolds was very sound at full back. Brian
Leyden was absolutely brilliant at centre half back. The two
midfielders Dean McGovern and Donal Feely were wonderful all
through. The forwards were all good but Luke Murphy, Niall McGovern
and Patrick Connaughton were exceptional. Next game is against
Glencar/Manorhamilton on Wednesday next.
Foireann:

Our
junior A team in Division 3 played Bornacoola on Saturday. Although
they were well beaten in the finish they put up quite a good
performance despite being short a number of key players. It was a
case of just the bare fifteen once again. At half time it was 1-7 to
0-4 for Bornacoola, with our points coming from Cormac Ó Suilleabháin,
Adrian Smith from a free, Rory O’Rourke and Trevor Martin. For
much of the second half they gave as good as they got and but for
two great saves by Fergal McGill in the Bornacoola goals from shots
by Cormac Ó Suilleabháin and Adrian Gallogly we could have been
ahead. Shane Murphy got a great point from an individual effort,
Rory O’Rourke, Adrian Gallogly and Adrian Smith got points. When
Rory O’Rourke got a goal there was only a few points in it but
Bornacoola finished stronger and won by 2-15 to 1-9.
Foireann:
Philip Farrelly, Kevin O’Connor, Gavin Brennan, Gordon Hughes,

On
Sunday morning in Mediterranean temperatures our Junior B team
played Annaduff in Division 4. Annaduff are at the top of this
division and we are at the bottom so we were expecting a tough
encounter. In the first half we defied the odds and were level close
to half time with a point from Shane McWeeney and Stephen Beirne
finished a good goal. At half time it was 0-6 to 1-1 in Annaduff’s
favour. However the second half largely belonged to Annaduff as they
scored 1-10 to our three points, one from a Paul Prior free and two
from Peter Reynolds. It finished as one would have expected,
Annaduff 1-16 to our 1-4

Sean O’Heslin’s U-12
team commenced their league campaign this week with an opening match
on Monday away to St. Mary’s. The Ballinamore side proved the
stronger in a highly entertaining game of football. Birthday Boy
Niall McGovern was the star of the show with his 4 goal haul, whilst
in defence Fergal Curran proved unbeatable between the posts; Brian
Leyden impressed bursting out of defence. Peter Reynolds handled the
aerial bombardment coming his way in the second half while our half
backs Róisín and Barry tackled tigerishly at the hint of any
danger. In midfield Dean McGovern led the way forward, whilst our
two corner forwards Paddy Connaughton and Daire Maxwell caused panic
in the Carrick defence every time they got the ball. Sarah Beth
Reilly and Adam Goldrick impressed when they made their appearance
in the second half and sniffed out any Carrick attacks whilst
upfront Conor Maxwell provided an aerial threat. The injured Oisín
McCaffrey waits to make his first appearance in the league.
On Friday evening we took on
Dromahair in ideal conditions. The first half was close and hard
fought whilst in the second the Ballinamore lads moved clear to win
comfortably in the end. Donal Feely caught the eye in midfield with
his non stop action performance whilst in the forwards Luke Murphy
danced his way to some well taken scores. In defence Mark O’Reilly
and Daire Reynolds handled whatever came their way. James Hamill
took a sweet point in the second half to prove his attacking
credentials. Archie Williams proved a handful for the Dromahair
defence following his introduction while Daire Murphy proved a
threat on the half forward line, Killian Dooner showed some nice
touches when the ball came his way. All in all a good weeks work
from the Ballinamore lads.

Sean O’Heslins
under-8s/under-10s played Mohill in a blitz on Friday 30th
May in Ballinamore and again in another on Saturday 7th
June in Mohill. Great fun and competitiveness was seen in both games
from both teams. The match in Ballinamore was special because it was
the first time the new set of jerseys was worn. They are sponsored
by Riverdale, Tile and Carpentry (R.T.C.), which is run by former
senior football championship winner with Sean O’Heslins, Jimmy
Heavey and the club wish to extend our gratitude to Jimmy for his
kind sponsorship.
The boys school progressed
to the boys school Division 1 Final over the past few weeks. On
Monday they contested the final against Mohill and put up a great
performance. Mohill got the goals and in a great final it ended
Mohill 3-4 Ballinamore 0-9.

Fergal Curran, David Gallagher, Philip Dolan, Luke Murphy, Seán
Fox, Donal Wrynn, Devin Quinn, David O’Connell, Stephen Gilheaney,
Mark McGrory, Brian Banks, Mark Plunkett, Cian McCaffrey, Pearse

Our under 12 hurlers played
in a blitz in Swanlinbar along with Lisbellaw, Drumlane and
Swanlinbar on May 24th. They enjoyed the event greatly
and well done to Ciaran McGovern and all in Swanlinbar. Our team
was: Fergal Curran, Brian Leyden, Patrick Connaughton, Conor Moran,
Donal Feely, Luke Murphy, Mark O`Reilly, Pearse Dolan, Dean
McGovern, Niall McGovern, Fergal McTague.
Important
Notice Regarding Park Development
While we all are delighted
with the progress in our new stand and dressing rooms, as with all
building sites there are many dangers to the general public and
especially to children. We would ask all members to be vigilant and
not enter the construction site.
Also trainers of all underage teams are asked that if balls
go into the site that the trainer himself or herself would retrieve
the ball.
It
is strange what dogs can get up to, but it has come to our notice
that on occasions when our sideline flags were left in position
after matches they were torn apart the next morning. It transpires
that it is a dog that is doing so. Whether he dosn’t like the Sean
O’Heslins colours we do not know. When asked, he didn’t reply.
Anyway the upshot of it is that we are asking all team mentors to
take up the sideline flags after each game and to put them in the
store.
Comhghairdeas
to St Felim’s First years who won the Connacht C League a couple
of weeks ago. Particularly to O’Heslins players Cian McCaffrey,
Anthony Maguire, Colm O`Reilly and Jack Cullen who was Man of the
Match.
Sympathy
is extended to the relations of Katie Cafferty, Tráthnóna who died
at the weekend. Since our Lotto started over ten years ago Katie
hardly missed a night as she arrived from Bingo with Mary Harte and
Margaret McKeon. She enjoyed the Lotto and won the nightly draw on

Division
4 game on Sunday at 2.30 in the Park against Annaduff.
Our
seniors had a good win over St Mary’s on Sunday, a win which puts
us on top of Division 2 with three wins out of three. It wasn’t as
easy as the scoreline suggests, particularly in the first half. We
got points from Seán Murray, Anton Arandelovic, James McWeeney
(free) and Rory O’Rourke but it was a well take penalty from Wayne
McKeon which made the difference at half-time when we led by just
1-5 to 0-4. Against St Mary’s second team, this did not look good
enough.
The
second half was much better and points in turn from James McWeeney
(free), Seán Murray, Anthony McTague and two good ones from Rory
O’Rourke left us leading by 1-10 to 0-6. Then we seemed to be in
bother when Carrick got a goal to leave only four points in it.
However, within minutes, Wayne McKeon finished a great goal from a
great move up the field and Rory O’Rourke followed with a great
point which left it comfortable. Indeed Rory O’Rourke had an
outstanding game and got four good points during the hour. Four more
points followed and it finished 2-14 to 1-8.
Foireann:
Philip Farrelly, John McWeeney, Joe Honeyman, Philip Murphy, Liam
Ferguson, Patrick McLoughlin, David Duignan, Wayne McKeon (2-1),

Murray (0-2). Subs: Paul McLoughlin for J Honeyman, Finnian Sharpley
(0-1) for James McWeeney, Shane Ferguson for Anton Arandelovic.
Our
Junior A team, which seemed dead and buried a few weeks ago, got
their second win in two weeks when they beat Drumkeerin by 1-13 to
1-8 in the Park on Monday. On this occasion we had probably the
strongest team we had out in this division so far this year. A week
earlier we had to ring around before the game to get fifteen. This
time we had half a dozen subs and most of our eligible senior
players. This was very evidently a strong team from the start and
good scores came from Seán McCartin, Shane Murphy and Adrian Smith
in particular in the first half. The goal was a great move finished
by Adrian Smith and we led comfortably by 1-9 to 0-4 at half time.
Drumkeerin
had a much better second half and they outscored us in that half.
Indeed only for a couple of great caves from Philip Farrelly we
could have been in trouble at the end. Brian Cafferty got a couple
of particularly good points when we needed them most towards the
end. There were lots of good performances particularly from Philip
Farrelly, David Leyden, Philip Murphy, Anthony McTague, Shane Murphy
and Brian Cafferty

Cormac Ó Suilleabháin for Adrian Smith.
The Sean O'Heslins Ladies
started their 9 A-Side League with a win over Fenagh.
The O'Heslins Ladies started off bright with some great scores and
were in control for most of the game. The girls played with
great pride and played some great football. It was a great
team effort by all. The game finished Sean O'Heslins 6-10 to
Fenagh 2-5.
Team Panel: Gillian Leyden, Michelle Fanning (1-2), Claire Fanning

Seniors
Win in league
Our
seniors made it two wins out of two in the Division 2 League on
Friday night when they beat Aughavas by 1-13 to 0-13. This was a
good close game right through and it was a significant win for a
number of reasons. We were short a few players through injury and a
few of those who played were carrying injuries as well. We fell
behind early on and in fact were in arrears for three quarters of
the game. However it was a great fighting performance and after we
took the lead on no less than three occasions in the second half,
Aughavas leveled again but still we fought back again. Extra time
has often been unkind to us; particularly in last year’s League
clash with Cloone where we lost our lead in extra time and
effectively lost promotion as a result. On Friday night the opposite
was the case as we took the lead finally with time almost up but we
added two points in extra time to ensure victory.
While
the backs didn’t perform too well in the first half they really
won this game for us in the last ten minutes when they played
superbly to contain Aughavas as they sought an equalizer. Philip
Farrelly made one crucial save in the first half when a goal would
have done us damage. Ciaran Murray was good all through in defence.
We struggled at midfield until the latter period when Wayne McKeon
improved the situation greatly. Brian Cafferty was the forward who
stood out for us and his four points from play, in particular the
second last score of the game was crucial. Finnian Sharpley made an
impression also when he came on.
Foireann:
Philip Farrelly, John McWeeney, Patrick McLoughlin, Philip Murphy,
Liam Ferguson (0-1), Ciaran Murray, David Duignan (0-1), Anton
Arandelovic, Paul McLoughlin, Brian Cafferty (0-4), James McWeeney
(0-3), Ronan Sharpley, Shane Murphy, Wayne McKeon (0-2), Seán
Murray (1-1). Subs: Anthony McTague for R Sharpley, Finnian Sharpley
(0-1) for A Arandelovic, David Leyden for S Murray.
Vodafone
did well on this match with the number of phone calls it took before
the match to try and resurrect fifteen players. When it was nearly
time to take the field we had thirteen players and given the
trouncing we got in our first three matches in this division it
seemed a hopeless cause. However, sometimes when all seems to be
working against one, things work out better. The fifteen players
that did turn up, plus two subs we had in the end, played
magnificently. Mohill got the first two points but got no more in
the first half and Joe McTague, Éamon Walsh and Brian Cafferty,
from a free, left it 0-3 to 0-2 at half time.
In
the second half points came from Brian Cafferty, three in a row from
Seán McCartin, the first from a free and then two good ones from
play. Then Séamus Donnelly added another good one and Brian
Cafferty finished with another to leave it 0-9 to 0-6 at the finish.
A most welcome and much improved performance from this team. The
backs were all good with David Leyden and Joe McTague especially
good. Anthony McTague had a great game at midfield and Brian
Cafferty, Seán McCartin and Éamon Walsh were best in attack. Most
second teams have a good sprinkling of first team players and if the
team performs well you can usually attribute that to the
contribution of the senior players on the team. Amazingly this
victory was achieved with only two players on duty who were on the
starting fifteen for the senior team on the previous evening. So it
was a victory for a team of young players in the main.
Foireann:
Philip Farrelly, Ruairí Ó Suilleabháin, David Leyden, Kevin
O’Connor, Joe McTague (0-1), Freddie Walsh, Naoise Hayden, Anthony
Curran, Anthony McTague, Stephen Beirne, Brian Cafferty (0-3), John

After
a surprise win over Leitrim Gaels a couple of weeks earlier, it was
back to the more usual for our Junior B team in Division 4. Last
year we drew with Aughawillan in the corresponding clash but with
second and third teams there can be great variations in the team on
duty from year to year. This year we took a hammering and were down
0-9 to 0-2 at half time and it finished 2-17 to 0-4. Our scores came
a point each from Paul Prior (free), Shane McWeeney, Cormac Ó
Suilleabháin and Adrian Murphy.

One
of the problems with our junior teams, which was highlighted at last
week’s general meeting is the serious lack of training done by
junior players. While the senior panel is training regularly very
few juniors are turning up for those training sessions. With good
summer weather now, all adult players are asked to turn out for
training, and it would certainly help with the performances of our
junior teams.
If
you walked down 8th Avenue in New York or any of the big
streets last week or if you went into a Manhattan pub or restaurant
you were sure to bump into someone from Leitrim. We calculated there
were about 70 people from Ballinamore over there and corresponding
numbers from every hole and corner of Leitrim. There were surely
close to the 2,000 mark from Leitrim alone, not to count the Leitrim
people from elsewhere in Ireland, and further afield.
There
were also of course Ballinamore people there who had come from
elsewhere around the world. Tom McCaffrey from Stradermot came all
the way from San Francisco. Tom is involved in the Young Irelanders
club in San Francisco and they are developing a Gaelic pitch there
at present. Tom is also involved with Na Cailíní Ceilteach, a
girls team with which his daughters play. They are currently
preparing for All American ladies competitions.
There
was a three-way reunion of the Travers Family from St Brigid’s St
in Gaelic Park. Frank travelled from Ballinamore, Des travelled from
Arkansas in America and Pat travelled from Beijing in China where he
now works. Good to hear that Tom McCaffrey and Des Travers keep in
touch with the GAA happenings in Cannaboe through the club web site.
While
the building of new stand is now moving again the club’s efforts
in fund raising are now very much on the agenda. One of the ideas
being progressed at present is to ask club members and supporters to
give a loan to the club for a five-year period. This loan would then
be paid back to the individual or company without interest. In this
way the club would be saving substantial interest payments. Details
have been circulated to a number of people some weeks ago and the
club officers would like to hear from these people or indeed anyone
else who may not have been contacted so far. If you would like to
get details on this development please contact Tom Burns, Conor
Harte or Joey Smith.
Well
done to our Dublin-based players who organised an event in Dublin to
help defray expenses of training in Dublin. The fund-raiser was
linked to a race night in Shelbourne Park recently

Our
under 14s drew with Manorhamilton on their final game and we now

Under
14
For
the second week in succession our U14’s were desperately unlucky
not to win a league match. We
played Carrigallen last Thursday evening in the Park in front of a
great crowd. We played
the better football throughout the game and were winning by two
points in the fourth minute of injury time when we conceded a flukey
goal. The scoreline of
1-13 to 4 – 5 (14 scores to 9) shows how we dominated the game and
played some excellent football.
The unlucky team on duty was : K Banks, K McHugh, A Maguire,
C Moran, M O’Dell, J Cullen, B Banks, M McGrory, A Abdallah, L
Murphy, C O’Reilly, C McCaffrey, D Feely, N Gallagher, D McGovern
and B Leyden. Our next
game is fixed for Friday next 16th May but this may
change so check posters for details.
Club Meeting
A general Club meeting takes
place this Friday evening at 9pm upstairs in the Community Centre.
This is open to all members and a good turnout is expected. This

Our U-12’s had a good win on Friday last in the Park in a challenge match against Templeport.

Scéalta na Seachtaine - 5 Bealtaine 2008
Final
Shield A game is on Saturday in Gortletteragh at 6.30. This game
wasn’t played last Saturday and is fixed for next Saturday. Our
junior ladies are playing in a new Connacht League and their first
fixture is against Renmore from Galway on next Saturday at 7.00 in
Kilbride, Co Roscommon
Our
Junior A team got a roasting from Allen Gaels on Sunday last. It was
a game when nothing went right, passes went astray, Allen Gaels took
every chance they got and a very bad first half left us behind by
5-7 to 0-3 at half time. Having played with the wind in the first
half, we thought there would be worse to come in the second half but
strangely we played a lot better in the second half and apart from a
goal that Allen Gaels got in the final minute we held our own even
against the fairly strong wind. It was a game where hardly anyone
played well apart from Gavin Brennan and Rory O’Rourke. In
finished Allen Gaels 5-13 to O’Heslins 0-6. We have played three
games and lost three so far in this division.
Foireann:
Kevin O’Connor, Neil Hughes, Gavin Brennan, Philip Murphy, Éamon
Walsh, Rory O’Rourke, Joseph McTague, Brian Cafferty (0-2),
Anthony Curran, Anthony McTague, Paul Prior (0-1), Shane Murphy
(0-1), Shane McWeeney (0-1), Adrian Smith 90-1), Seán McCartin.
Subs used; Michael Costello, Freddie Walsh.
Our
Junior B team had an unexpected and most deserved victory over
Leitrim Gaels on Monday in the Park. It was very different from the
display of our Junior A team on Sunday and the main difference was
effort. Playing Leitrim Gaels first team we would have expected to
be up against it based on previous years experience. However, from
the start there was determined effort and some outstanding displays.
We led at half time by 2-6 to 0-3 and it finished 2-9 to 1-8.
In defence Éamon Walsh had an outstanding game and so too
had Gavin Brennan. Joseph Murphy at centre half was particularly
good in the first half. Paul Prior had a great game at midfield. In
attack Trevor Martin was exceptional and Cormac O Suilleabháin,
Shane McWeeney and Stephen Beirne when he came on, were also in good
form. It was great to see half a dozen subs available for a third
team game and this victory; their first in four outings should help
greatly.
Foireann:
Darren Reynolds, Ciaran Maxwell, Gavin Brennan, Éamon Walsh, Neil
Hughes, Joseph Murphy, Gordon Hughes, Paul Prior (0-3), Jason
Kellett, Alan Prior, Cormac Ó Suilleabháin (1-0), Shane McWeeney
(0-1), Trevor Martin (1-2), Adrian Murphy, Colm Brennan. Subs:
Stephen Beirne (0-1) for C Brennan,
Peter Reynolds (0-1) for Jason Kellett, Adrian Gallogly (0-1)
for A Murphy, Seamus Donnelly for A Prior, |Daren McFarland for P
Prior
Sean
O'Heslins ladies beat neighbours Aughnasheelin.
This was the girls best performance to date, with a great team
effort from our number 1 to 13 and our subs. The O'Heslins
Ladies seem to be in control of the game from start to finish.
The girls took some great scores and played some great football,
which was a joy to watch. The game finished Sean O'Heslins
5-11 to Aughnasheelin 0-2. We had some great support at the
game on Sunday and we hope they come next Saturday the 10th May as
the girls will be taking part in the Connacht League in Kilbride in
Roscommon against Renmore of Galway @ 7.00pm. Please come
along and support the Sean O'Heslins Ladies. The best of luck
to all the girls taking part in the Connacht League.
The ladies section of the
club have a very interesting forecast competition for the All
Ireland football championship. In the competition you get a card
where you forecast the winners of each game in the All Ireland
series, you get points for every correct answer and the person with
the most points is the winner of €500. It is a fascinating type of
forecast and it costs only €10 to enter. Anyone who would like to
support the Sean O'Heslins Ladies Fundraising can contact either
Sean Reynolds on 087 6528385 or Aisling Flaherty on 087 1364541, or
Veronica Smith or anyone within the club. Please note that all
tickets should be back with a ladies club member by Friday the 9th
May 2008 and no later.
Our 3rd match in
the U-14 league ended in a draw in Aughawillan against Drumreilly on
Friday evening last. After conceding 2 early goals we rallied and
were very unlucky not to win in the closing stages and thanks to
some good defending we were lucky not to lose. Our team on duty last
Fri. night was K. Banks, B. Banks, A. Maguire, C. Moran, M.
O’Dell, J. Cullen, N. Creamer, M. McGrory, A. Abdalla, L. Murphy,
C. O`Reilly, D. McGovern, D. Feely, C. Reynolds, C. McCaffrey. Subs
used K. McHugh and E. Moran. Our next match is fixed for next Fri
eve at home to Carrigallen but this may change so check posters for
confirmation of fixture.
The
will be a general club meeting, open to all club members on Friday
week next. Venue and time in next week’s notes.
Comhghairdeas

heading for Gaelic Park on Sunday next. Go n-éirí le foireann

Scéalta na Seachtaine -
28 Aibreain 2008
Our Nuachleas went down
wonderfully well in Killarney on Saturday and the general consensus
was that there were only two in it: Leitrim and Tyrone. Opinions
varied, some of course thought we were way ahead, others said it was
a toss up but in the end the adjudicators went for Tyrone. The
bigger disappointment really was that no Leitrim groups won at all,
and this was the second year where Leitrim had 5 clubs represented.
However, we wont let that stop our growth. Already ideas for 2009
were discussed on the bus from Killarney and with 40 years of Scór
to be celebrated in 2009 what better time to win again.
In the late hours of Saturday night a great night was had by
all and the singing and music and recitations continued into the
small hours of a Kerry morning. In what is now almost an annual
event Sunday morning started with mass in the Friary at 11.30 and
the weary Scór travellers reached Ballinamore at 7.00pm with the
bonfire material safely stowed away for another year.
And so the curtain came down on Scor Sinsear for another year in Killarney last Saturday night. The Scór committee would like to
